We all know how important vitamins and minerals are for our general well-being. However, fibers, although equally important, are sometimes ignored. Fibers are present in the fruits and vegetables that we eat daily. It is known that consuming the right amount of fiber helps in reducing the chances of constipation. Along with that, it has been recently proved that it is also helpful in reducing the risk of some major chronic diseases.
There are many kinds of fibers and each one has different effects on various aspects of our health. Let’s look at some of the health benefits of fiber:
Fiber health benefits
- Maintains blood sugar levels:
Our body gets soluble fiber from several fruits and vegetables. The soluble fiber slows down the breakdown of carbohydrates and the absorption of sugar. Thus, it maintains the blood sugar level in our body.
- Maintains a healthy heart:
Many researchers have proved that eating fiber-rich food reduces the risk of heart disease by 45%.
When you eat fiber, you will get a feeling of fullness. As a result, the craving for the additive amount of food will be reduced. Additionally, fibers promote digestion. Thus, your weight will be in control.
- Maintains healthy skin:
When yeast and fungus are excreted from your skin, it leads to acne or rashes. But the psyllium fibers help in excreting them out from your body through your stool. Thus, it takes care of your skin as well.
Dr. Loren Cordain who is a professor at Colorado State University and an expert on Palaeolithic lifestyles says that“every American should eat 20 to 30 Grams of fibers daily”.
It is recommended that men of age 50 or younger should consume 38 grams of fibers and Women of the same age need 25 grams of fibers per day. On the other hand, men aged 51 or above need to have 30 grams of fibers and Women of the same age should have 21 grams of it.
